Nowadays, many people start learning English at a very young age instead of studying their local languages. Some believe that this should be avoided since it can cause the local languages to die out. However, I think it is important for everyone to learn English for several reasons.
To begin with, English can be more useful than local languages. Since English is an official language, schools in most countries learn English as their secondary language. There are also more than 10 countries that have English as their national language. Therefore, learning English will allow us to communicate better.
Secondly, preserving every local languages might be a very tough challenge. Globalization is happening all over the world, people travel across various countries and connections between many companies and countries are being more and more complex. Accordingly, the role of English is becoming bigger. So even though we try to save the dying languages by learning them, we cannot stop studying and using English. It’s not only tough but it may be impossible since the global chain between many things are expanding as time goes by.
Lastly, to focus on using local languages can be a barrier to develop world economy and business. Languages create a bond between the people who use it, which means that it can create a wall to an outsider of the community in reverse. That will be a huge obstruction when it comes to global businesses, because they require cooperations among many people from many places.
Saving local languages do have some advantages, but it can also have many negative effects too. Therefore, I believe that it is important for everyone to learn English than to study their local languages. |
